Resemblance

– A family story

Graphic version by James Boekbinder and Zhenya Pashkina of the book by Judith Uyterlinde

Using letters, photographs, films, interviews and other sources, we are creating an entirely graphic version of best-selling non-fiction author Judith Uyterlinde's second book. The book tells two stories at once: of her adoption of a child, and her uncovering of the hidden part of her family's story during WWII. On the eve of a life-threatening operation Judith's mother gave her a box of letters from her own mother, Judith’s grandmother Bep Bloemendal.

Kept secret for decades, these letters from World War II reveal a dramatic family story that has never fully been told. When family members break their silence. Judith discovers a fascinating red thread in her family history: generation after generation of children has been raised by people who were not their biological parents. It turns out that by adopting, Judith is continuing rather than breaking with a family tradition.
